Field of the Invention The present invention relates to high efficiency lighting sources and, more particularly, to high-output illumination sources for generating high-energy radiation in the blue and ultraviolet regions of the visible spectrum, e.g., for use in illumination devices, radiation sources, and optical sources. 2. Description of the Related Art Various systems, devices, and methods for generating high-energy blue and ultraviolet radiation are known in the art. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 4,806,854 to McIntyre discloses a pulsed ultraviolet laser device including a pump laser and an optical fiber amplifier. The optical fiber amplifier contains an erbium doped optical fiber. A temperature control system is provided for varying the temperature of the optical fiber. In one mode of operation, the optical fiber is heated to vaporize a selected portion thereof. Once vaporized, a quantity of gas is released from the vaporized portion of the optical fiber. The released gas is directed to a receiving aperture to provide the gas stream required to provide the gain for the optical fiber amplifier. The optical fiber amplifier is thereby heated, in an erbium doped fashion, by the released gas. During another mode of operation, a thermal gradient is generated within the optical fiber to generate light of the frequency of the laser within the optical fiber. U.S. Pat. No. 4,957,004 to Wolf discloses an erbium-doped fiber laser. The erbium-doped fiber is heated by a laser diode operating at a predetermined wavelength. An optical frequency shifter is provided to shift the frequency of the laser diode to the desired wavelength. The optical fiber is configured as a resonator cavity for producing a laser beam. U.S. Pat. No. 4,973,854 to Wolf discloses a high-energy excimer-laser device. An excimer laser device includes a fuel gas within a laser chamber. A metal halide gas is introduced into the laser chamber to facilitate the production of at least two high-energy excimer-laser pulses. U.S. Pat. No. 5,109,165 to Wolf et al. discloses a pulsed laser and pulsed laser device. A pulsed laser is provided that includes a discharge tube having
